Acolyte Schedule

A message from the Chaplain:
To Parents and Students: Lower School students in Primary through 4th grade have the  opportunity to serve as acolytes for at least one chapel every year. Most children enjoy this voluntary experience. Parents are always welcome at chapel and often like to photograph their children when they serve as acolytes.  Chapel begins at 11:50 a.m. on Mondays for students in 2nd through 5th and at 8:10 a.m. on Fridays for our students in Primary through 5th grade, unless otherwise noted. Three to five children may be scheduled to serve as acolytes for a Chapel. Acolytes should arrive at the Chapel 15 minutes before the Chapel begins (11:35 a.m. on Mondays and 7:55 a.m. on Fridays).  If you have any questions, please contact your teacher or Chaplain Jennie (kiffmeyerj@oes.edu).  Thank you!

Mondays: 2nd-5th grade, 11:50 a.m.-12:20 p.m.
Fridays: Primary-5th grade, Chapel begins at 8:10 a.m.

Update: October 25

Coming Up:

October 28:                 Student Share – 2:10
October 29 & 30:        No School - Parent Conferences

Dear Parents,

The fourth and fifth grade students elected two representatives from each class to a recess council that has been reviewing challenges and possible solutions to the 4/5 afternoon recess. Next week, we will be trying out some of the solutions the students have decided upon such as opening additional indoor and outdoor space. This is hopefully the first of many opportunities for students to take responsibility in working collaboratively to solve real life problems. Council representatives will rotate through the year depending on their areas of interest.

Reading
Student read a book in small groups this week. I took picture books and copied all of the text into one document. I wanted to students to continue to work in small groups on taking notes, inferring meaning, and paying attention to author's craft. We followed a similar structure when reading Tiger Rising and I wanted to see what students would do with support but also independence. Overall, it has been rocky in places, working together and staying on task but with continued support and guidance our discussions have been very good. I believe students are starting to see the value of digging deeper besides "because you told us too." Over the weekend, they were asked to finish the reading response they started in class in which they choose one big idea they gathered from the text and supported their thinking with evidence. This week, students will be able to read the book with illustrations. We will also return to our book bags and find ways to use these strategies and skills when reading independently.

Writing
We continue to work on our Realistic Fiction stories. Our beginning, middle and endings are finished. Students have worked to add drama to their stories by adding dialogue, emotion and action. This week we are focusing on minor revisions and editing. We are learning about formatting on the computer as well as paragraphs and indenting for dialogue.

Math
We have been working with big numbers and data charts. While the class was quick to report that addition and subtraction were much to easy a topic to explore, we have been finding that maybe we do need to discuss strategies and structures for big numbers! We also felt very confident with graphs and charts until we were asked to make our own with labels and then reflect on these charts with new vocabulary such as mode, median, and range. We will continue to review these skills for the Unit 2 Assessment on Wednesday.

Social Studies
We continue to debrief our time at the Bonneville Dam; highlight the implications of water on our campus, and in our state. We are exploring idea that dams are good and bad. We are focusing on Oregon right now but have started to discuss dams in other countries. We are also reviewing the Sandy River where a dam was removed, is this good or bad? We are diving into many different topics surrounding the environment and how humans interact with their world. Please discuss and share your discussions and resources with the class. We love when friends bring in articles and newspapers to add to the discussion.

Passion Projects
After a long process of reviewing expectations and possibilities for Passion Projects, we are ready to hit the ground running. Students have topics of study. They are all expected to share their learning with the class and hopefully beyond. Please talk with your child about their topic and look out for a blog post devoted to Passion Projects soon!

Student Share Day
I hope you have Student Share Day - October 28th at 2:10 on your calendars. I know that it is difficult for some of you to take time off work, so please let me know if we need to re-schedule. This is an informal event; you are welcome to leave early and take your child, or stay the whole time. We’re looking forward to this time of sharing!

Bonneville Dam

We had an awesome field trip today to the Bonneville Dam. Here is a quick view into the sights of the day.

Update: October 11

Coming Up:
October 14:            Bonneville Dam Field Trip:  8:10-2:30 Volunteers Needed
October 28:            Parent Share Day: 2:10-2:45
October 29-30:      No School -- Parent Conferences
Reading
We continued to read The Tiger Rising, taking time to stop and reflect as we read to build a deeper understanding of what we read. Last week, we carefully organized all the notes we had from our readings together and started a draft of a reading response. Tomorrow a 1/2 page response exploring a theme, symbolism or diving into analyzing one of the characters is due. Students are exploring an essay format and using evidence to back up their thoughts while also exploring a deeper message throughout the book. This is a challenging assignment and I can't wait to see what they come up with on Monday.

Writing
Students continue to write their Realistic Fiction Draft. This week, we will be...
  • revising our leads
  • using our favorite authors to help us develop our craft
  • adding transitions
Grammar
Students reviewed simple sentences this week. We talked about Nouns and Verbs within sentences. We played a game with two word sentences. We study simple sentences to start to build understanding of sentence structures and the parts of sentences. With this knowledge, we were able to look over small sections of our realistic fiction story to make sure we had sentences clearly marked with capitals and ending punctuation.

Math
Students finished their math project called Geometry Town which helped strengthen concepts and vocabulary from Unit 1.  Overall, the results of the Geometry Assessment was strong and tests should come home Monday to be signed and then returned to school.
We continue to dive into Unit 2: Numbers and Place Value. We will take the study guide pretest to see what lessons the class needs more review and what lessons need some deepening.
Social Studies
This week fourth graders went to the Middle School for a presentation by Mrs. Hancock on Water Wonders. Ask your child about:
  • The history of the beaver dam in our wetlands
  • Fanno Creek and the work our Middle and Upper School students did to protect our wetlands.
  • How OES addressed the problem of a narrow Fanno Creek and the fast rushing waters that caused the shrinking pond and drought.
  • The billboard in Peru that uses the humid air near the equator to make water.
  • What would happen if we collected every drop of rain that falls on entire planet and spread it out evenly so that everyone got the same amount? How much water would we we get?
  • If you counted the steps people take in Africa, walking to access clean drinkable water, what would they equal?
Student Share Day
We’re planning a Student Share Day for October 28th, the day before conferences.  We are planning this day there for you to look at everything your child has done because the conferences last only for thirty minutes.  We hope that seeing what your child has done will also help you form questions about the work. Student Share Day is scheduled for 2:10, right after recess.  I know that it is difficult for some of you to take time off from work, so please let me know if we need to re-schedule.
Parent Conferences
Please sign up for your conference by 10/23.  Any scheduling changes made after 10/23 will need to be made directly with me.

Field Trip
We are excited about our trip to the Bonneville Dam.  Please make sure that your child gets to school on time because we want to leave at 8:10.
