Andy Goldsworthy inspired Assembly
Inspired by the naturalist artist Andy Goldsworthy, the whole Lower School went out into the woods to create some art with natural objects. We tried to create mandalas with items we found on the ground.

First Grade Play
This morning, we were fortunate to be allowed to watch the 1st grade rehearsal for their performance next week (show times are when we are away at camp.)
The first graders have been studying the heart and the connection between the heart, emotions and the brain. It was a beautiful, insightful and funny show that shared their thinking about how these three are connected and work together.

Today, we returned to the Woodburn Family Center for another morning of service.
We played with and talked to babies, toddlers and preschoolers. We love the kids and their caregivers love the change in routine!

Update May 20
Happy Friday!
Important Dates:
May 23 All camp paperwork is due: Medication form, behavioral form, OMSI health form, optional tee-shit/hoodie order form
May 23-24 Chris is at a full day training with all 3/4/5 grade teachers
May 23 GOBS book collection
May 25 We visit GOBS
May 25 Spanish field trip to Woodburn Family Center
May 30: No School for Memorial Day
June 1-3 Camp Grey--4th grade Overnight trip
This week:
Reading:
We are finishing our book club discussions and Amazon book projects. In class, we are sharing out some of our book and book club highlights. I am noticing that while students fluency and accuracy in improving, we continue to work on slowing down while reading to discover symbolism and infer meaning beyond the stated actions.
Writing:
This week we are revising and publishing our poetry. This can be tricky since poetry does not follow strict rules, often students want to write it once and then say they are finished and their work is perfect. We are looking at ways to improve our word choice and rhythm.
Math:
Unit 8 assessment review and then start our last unit before the end of the year review. We are reviewing some big topics such as multi digit multiplication, long division, area/perimeter, and fractions/decimals/percentages.
Peace Games:
Next week will be our last week of Peace Games. We are trying to wrap it up before we head to camp.

Unicycling
Hello 4th grade parents!
It’s that time again…unicycles! Woohoooo! Your child will be participating in the unicycling unit this Tuesday (5/17) and Thursday (5/19). They will need to bring in their helmet by Tuesday morning and will not be allowed to ride on a unicycle without one. This is only a two day unit, so I hope they will bring their helmets for those days. The helmets will also need to be stored in their classroom and brought to PE each day for sanitary reasons.
The unicycles are a part of another exciting rotation unit where they will also have the opportunity to play Pillo Polo with Coach Corris and Ultimate Frisbee/Ball with Coach Jessica. If you have any questions, please let me know.
These are the students who will be participating this week...
5/17 & 5/19: Gregory Porter Kaan Renee Owe
5/24 & 5/25: Ari Julian Lahna Ria Solomon Tatum
5/31 & 6/7: Alex Anna Arthur Linnea Lou Willa

Update May 8
Important Dates:
5/9 Mount Hood Chapel
5/11 Mount Hood Climb Service Day: 4th grade will be pulling ivy and planting bulbs on campus
5/12 Parent Meeting about Camp Grey 8-9
5/16 Moving up to 5th Grade Parent Meeting
June 1-3 Camp Grey--4th grade Overnight trip
This week:
Reading:
We continue to read Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai (about Laos refugees moving to Alabama, USA.)
Small group book clubs will begin this week.
Writing:
We continue to take time to write poetry and focus is on line breaks, figurative language, and interesting adjectives. Students will be asked to try out the process solo for homework this week and I am interested n what they will bring in! I am still working on getting a local poet to come in a talk to us about her experience writing poetry!
Math:
Overall, students did an outstanding job on the Unit 7 assessment. We need to continue to work on multi-digit multiplication and division. We will breeze through our area and perimeter unit since we have already reviewed most content with Tracy in January/February. We hope to do a couple more projects and then the Unit 8 assessment mid month.
Peace Games:
Peace Games are bringing a lot of attention to the importance of social niceties in the classroom, workplace and in peace making. Countries have a little of 33 problems currently affecting their world. They have to think not only of what they want but what might be best for their country and the countries around them. As a class we continue to try to battle "negative talk" in the classroom as well as open communication. Talking with our peers about our feelings before they are overwhelming. Last week, we engaged in a lot of discussion about if apologies were always needed or if acknowledging other people's feelings was enough when discourse happened! Needless to say, it has been a lot of social dialogue lately as well as a lot of personal growth. I continue to be encouraged and impressed by the individual growth in the classroom.

Update May 1
Important Dates:
5/9 Mount Hood Chapel

5/12 Parent Meeting about Camp Grey 8-9
5/16 Moving up to 5th Grade Parent Meeting
June 1-3 Camp Grey--4th grade Overnight trip
This week:
Reading: Students continue to read their own books for pleasure while also analyzing possible themes. Investigating the character's actions, feelings and motivations can help us understand the theme and the author's message for their readers.
We are reading the book Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai which is about Laos refugees moving to Alabama, USA. While reading the book, we are looking deeper at the themes, how the character develops and changes, the author's message, taking notes about the culture of Vietnam and how the government affects its people in times of conflict.
Writing: We are working on poetry writing. Right now our focus is on line breaks, figurative language, and interesting adjectives. Writing poetry is a challenge. We hope to produce a small collection and poems to share with our larger community. I am hoping to arrange for a local poet to come in a talk to us about her experience writing poetry and maybe give us some writing tips!
Math: We will finish Unit 7 Tuesday. Unit 8 will be a quick unit since we have already worked on area and perimeter with Tracy Arensberg this winter. Students are also asked to work on a math project creating a dream house in their new country.
Peace Games: Peace Games start Wednesday. Our countries are built, flags made, maps created, histories being written, and culture being explored! On Wednesday, we will learn more about the game rules and learn of our country's problems. Country teams need to work together to solve their country's problems such as droughts and floods, on time and on budget! It takes teamwork, delegation, problem solving, and persistence.
